An extremely well preserved medieval fortress that has never been conquered due to its architecture and its means of defense during all ages. The water channel around the fortress is still home for some swan families, as they were in the Middle Ages. Fagaras fortress is now a place for various exhibitions - art, weaponry, various design objects from Transilvania.

Stunning fortress surrounded by moat (with swans). Photogenic - particularly with the golden domes of the church beside it. Lots to explore. The museum inside is beautifully restored and well presented, but lacks star exhibits. Info in English is patchy - no translation of the text about its communist era use as a prison for political detainees. Don't miss the impressive throne room. If you want to help save the planet, keep your unnecessary plastic overshoes after the museum - they give you another set upstairs!

One of the best fortresses to visit in Romania. Don't let the modest exterior fool you. For the small entrance fee you get to see one of the richest museums. Well worth the time and money, and an absolute must see if you are in the area.

I have passed many times through Fagaras and didn't knew about the fortress, it was a loss. After the visit I can only say that it is too bad it's not all open to the public. It looks abnd feels medieval and it has a nice museum with old artefacts. If you ever pass through Fagaras it is a must to visit.
