It's interesting hearing about the house and it's occupants, and it really is a magnificent property. There wasn't any time on the tour to just hang out and enjoy the view or sculpture gardens, as we were being shunted on to get back to the bus to leave. We were scolded for taking too long because we were trying to take a couple of photos, as were some other members of the tour group. The tour had arrived late, so maybe that's why it was so rushed. Would've been nice to have got the full amount of time we paid for though.

This is worth visiting if you like history, art, and America. It's unique and unlike most of the things you'll see in NYC. also, it's not too far from NYC by car or train. I would recommend making a day out of it.

Had an afternoon to kill and didn't want to do this at home. Having been there at once before we thought it would be a worthwhile experience to walk around Kykuit and show our kids what the life looked like for some of the most powerful people in the world at one time.
The estate is amazing situated atop the hill that you can see the Tappan Zee from it but not the other way around (I checked) is great. The estate also houses a large collection of various items including art and antique cars and sculptures and it is very interesting for the kids to see as well as educational.
It's a little harder with toddlers because the old houses are not designed to have a stroller rolling through (small hallways and narrow stairs) but still it is fun for them to walk around the grounds playing.

Wonderful place to visit. Beautiful architecture and scenery. Guided tour was good and the view from terrace was simply breathtaking.

It takes a lot to impress me now a day with all the art and architecture in the world at your fingertips via the web, but this place was just wow. The stone work, the landscaping, the intricate details paid to every little thing in every nook and cranny of the estate was just impressive. This place was built like a castle fortress and will clearly stand for hundreds of years.
The tour guide was amazing, very knowledgeable and had infinite patience with peoples questions. This estate borrowed styles from England, France, and a lot of art from all over Asia. I have been to Paris and London and this place can definitely hold its own compared to the castles and cathedrals of those cities.
I highly recommend this tour but be prepared for a solid 2+ hours of walking up and down stairs... the views are worth it.
